Despite not posting a PGA Tour win for over two years, American Matt Kuchar jumps to number one this week in the Razzball Fantasy Golf Rankings, June 7, 2016 edition.
Proving that consistency is sometimes more impressive than winning titles, the 37-year old PGA Tour veteran posted his fourth Top six finish in the last four weeks on Sunday, a tie for fourth place at the Memorial Tournament. The 2012 Players Champion, also had a 6th place finish at the Dean & Deluca Invitational and cashed third place cheques at Byron Nelson and Players in his recent run of form.
Kuchar moves up a spot from #2 last week and has a less than 200 point lead over second ranked Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland. McIlroy shared 4th with Kuchar at Muirfield Village to move for 3rd to 2nd in our weekly survey. The former number one player in the Official World Golf Ranking last held the number one spot on November 30, 2015.
After a five week run at number one, Australia’s Jason Day slips to third, after failing to post a Top 25 finish at the Memorial, despite being in contention heading into Sunday’s final round. A 74 dropped him into a tie for 27th at Jack’s place and a fall out of top spot in the Razzball Fantasy Golf Rankings, June 7, 2016 edition.
Despite a T57th at Muirfield Village, defending U.S. Open champion Jordan Spieth holds at number four for a second consecutive week. The 22-year old American was first in the weekly rankings for a week on January 25th.
The only new entry in the top five is Sweden’s Rikard Karlberg. Karlberg, a 29-year old from Sweden, finished 7th at the Nordea Masters in Stockholm, his third Top 10 European Tour finish in three weeks, to jump from 9th to 5th.
This Week’s Movers
There are four new players in this week’s Top 20, including two who’ve never been in this position since we started our weekly rankings.
Leading the debuts is English youngster Matthew Fitzpatrick, who returns to the Top 20 for the first time since January 18th after a dominating win at the European Tour’s Nordea Masters. He explodes from 95th to 8th on the strength of his second Euro Tour victory. The 21-year old, Sheffield native, reached as high as 3rd in the November 23, 2015 edition of the rankings.
Another European Tour star makes his Top 20 debut at #9, up from 31st last week. Long-hitting Belgian, Nicolas Colsaerts makes the jump after a solid 3rd place finish in Stockholm.
The biggest mover of the week is American William McGirt who moves 153rd to 13th after a career-changing win at Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament, his first PGA Tour victory. The 36-year old journeyman previously peaked at #28 in our rankings on November 16, 2015.
The fourth new edition to the Top 20 is no stranger to the upper slots in our rankings. American Dustin Johnson re-enters the Top 20 this week after a one week absence. His third place finish at the Memorial improves his position by 13 places to 14th. DJ has placed as high as 4th on the Razzball Fantasy Golf Rankings on several occasions, the last time coming on May 3rd.
Johnson is the marquee player in the field for this week’s FedEx St. Jude Classic, as many of the top players are resting for next week’s U.S. Open. The sixth ranked player in the world is joined by Americans Brooks Koepka and Phil Mickelson. Koepka is 17th in this week’s Official World Golf Rankings and Mickelson is 20th.
In Europe, BMW PGA champion Chris Wood, ranked 23rd in the World, headlines the start list for the Lyoness Open in Austria. Other notables in the field include hometown hero Bernd Wiesberger of Austria and Holland’s Joost Luiten.
The Rankings Methodology
Razzball’s Fantasy Golf Rankings are compiled using a rolling 10-tournament window from both the PGA and European Tours, and other key world-wide events, with the most recent events weighted more heavily. Bonus points are awarded for top tier events like the FedEx Cup Playoffs, European Tour Championship and World Golf Championships, with the most points up for grabs during the four majors and the Players Championship.
The rankings are published every week during the, now, never-ending, golf season.
