The Razzball.com Fantasy Golf Rankings, August 18, 2016 edition reflects the current holding pattern in the world of professional golf.
Sandwiched between an unusually busy major season and the PGA Tour playoffs, most of the leading players are busy catching their breath before the next pressure-packed segment of the season unfolds.
That means the Top 20 of the Fantasy Golf Rankings, August 18, 2016 edition look a lot like last week’s rankings. The Top five contains the same five players, although the order has been shuffled slightly.
At the top, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson is number one for a third consecutive week, consolidating his position with a second place finish in the inaugural Olympic Golf tournament.
Australian Jason Day logs a 22nd consecutive week in the Top 10, moving up a spot to number two. PGA champion Jimmy Walker, who like Day was idle this week, moved up a spot to third in our weekly survey.
New Additions to the Top 20
A total of four players make Top 20 re-entries this week.
Leading the charge is Olympic Gold medalist Justin Rose of England, who uses his win in Rio to jump 71st to 11th. It is the 2013 U.S. Open champion’s first appearance in the Top 20 since May 24, 2016. He reached a peak of #4 in the rankings on November 16, 2015.
Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo returns to the Top 20 after a one week absence improving seven spots to 14th. The PGA Tour winner finished T8 in Rio.
Matt Kuchar of the U.S.A. picked up a bronze medal at the Olympics and the catapults him back into the Top 20 at number 16, up from 30th a week ago. Kuchar is a former number one in our rankings, holding the top spot for two weeks in June 2016.
John Deere Classic champion Ryan Moore is the final newcomer to the survey, making the biggest jump of the week, 150 spots as he moves from 169th to 19th. The five-time PGA Tour winner last appeared in the Top 20 on April 5, 2106 and reached a peak of number eight one week earlier.
Both the PGA Tour and European Tours are back in action this week as both tours head to their respective tour championships.
On this side of the Atlantic, the PGA Tour is in Greensboro, North Carolina for the 2016 Wyndham Championship.
The field features only one player currently ranked in the Top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings, world number eight Rickie Fowler of the United States, but 17 of the Top 50 players in the world tee it up today at the Sedgefield Country Club.
Current Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III picked up a surprise win last year but is not back to defend his title.
In addition to Fowler, other notable players in the field include PGA champion Jimmy Walker, making his first start since picking up his first career major; American Patrick Reed, the 14th ranked player in the world; Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama; and “Mr. 58”, Jim Furyk.
In Europe, the tour is in Prague, Czech Republic, for the third playing of the D+D Real Czech Masters.
Defending champion Thomas Pieters of Belgium is back to defend his title a week after just missing the podium at the Olympics with a fourth place finish. Other leading players in the draw include a trio of Englishmen – Andy Sullivan, Lee Westwood and Matthew Fitzpatrick.
The Rankings Methodology
Razzball’s Fantasy Golf Rankings are compiled using a rolling 10-tournament window from both the PGA and European Tours, and other key world-wide events, with the most recent events weighted more heavily. Bonus points are awarded for top tier events like the FedEx Cup Playoffs, European Tour Championship and World Golf Championships, with the most points up for grabs during the four majors and the Players Championship.
The rankings are published every week during the, now, never-ending, golf season.
